Bureau issues alert on advertising firms
The Better Business Bureau of North Central Texas continues to warn local businesses and parents about advertisers contacting businesses throughout the area.
North Central Texas businesses are inundated with emails from this company, Communities Unlimited LLC, saying it is selling advertising space on local high school athletic posters, calendars and magnetized city guides, according to Monica Horton, president of the Wichita Falls BBB office.
The BBB has confirmed with the appropriate organizations that this is not the case.
Ossian Enterprises, which also operates under the names American Publishing, AM Publishing, Ads Sports and Communities Unlimited, has several unanswered complaints with the BBB in Davenport, Iowa — and the business has an F rating with the BBB.
Based on the Iowa BBB files, "This company has a pattern of complaints concerning sales practice issues. Complainants primarily allege that after purchasing advertising space on the company community magnets or high school posters, they fail to receive the promised merchandise.
A number of complainants have stated that as part of its sales pitch, the company states that it will distribute up to 5,000 posters or magnets to members of the community. The complainants later face difficulty finding substantiation that any finished products were ever distributed.
Other complaints allege that after much difficulty, they received a product of poor or substandard quality that did not match the company mock up example used in their sales pitch."
Names for the advertising agents include Mike Bruce, Mike Lugo and Chavaras Trice, Horton said.
Communities Unlimited sent solicitations to businesses in the North Central Texas area, prompting the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce & Industry to issue an alert that neither they nor the City of Wichita Falls are sponsoring the "2011 City of Wichita Falls Area Magnetized Information Guide."

The chamber said it has not commissioned the City Guide and Rider High School's Athletic Department said it does not publish a poster with AM Publishing.
If you receive such an offer you should verify with the school, city or chamber that appears to be sponsoring the promotion that they are, indeed, publishing such a calendar with the company.
