Rice Lake woman named News-Shield editor
Glynn graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston with a degree in journalism and worked for newspapers in South Florida and Illinois before moving to Wisconsin in 1996. As the newspaper industry underwent transition into the computerized days, Glynn pursued a career in desktop publishing and marketing, working for a public finance firm in St. Paul and for a Catholic hospital in New Richmond designing newsletters, editing, and writing specialized copy. She returned to graduate school in Madison from 2002 through 2005, earning a law degree from the University of Wisconsin. After five years practicing law privately, Glynn was eager to return to straight news writing and reporting.
"A law degree is a fine thing for background knowledge, both in covering court cases and in general, understanding the complex issues that affect our society and government today," Glynn said. "Still, the itch to return to my roots so to speak, from the more stilted writing and advocacy-based ways of lawyers, to the more information-gathering and neutrally balanced ways of examining all sides of a complex issue, which a journalist experiences when the work is done right ... it was a career choice I am happy to make."
Glynn was born in Chicago, and raised in the small, south suburban town of Thornton, Ill. Home of the world's largest commercial limestone quarry, travellers on the Tri-State Tollway might be familiar with the miles-deep quarry in her hometown.
"I look forward to learning more about issues such as frac sand mining here in our county, and helping to dispel myths and inform the public," Glynn said. "Good communication - honest and open - is the best way I know to let 'we the people' who make up the government have a voice in making the best choices for themselves and their communities."
Glynn is especially grateful to two Barron News-Shield associates - retired editor Bob Groshong and secretary Milly Brady - for helping her make the transition to News Editor. "They both seem to know everyone in town, how to spell their names, and even how to pronounce them. Those are invaluable skills for anyone starting out, and I'm thankful for all their help thus far," she added.

Violating a child custody order could result in criminal charges ...
When it comes to determining child custody, the court may decide that it is in the best interests of the children to spend equal time with both parents. In other situations, it is better for one parent to have primary custody while the other maintains visitation rights. Whatever the outcome, child custody agreements are court-ordered and violating a custody order can lead to penalties.
If one parent takes the children in violation of a child custody agreement, that parent could be charged with kidnapping. Often the biggest concern is the welfare of the children if they are unexpectedly removed from their custodial parent.
For example, one man was recently arrested for taking his two children from their mother; he did not have custody of them. The details of the incident are unclear, but when the mother realized the children were gone and that the father had taken them, she notified the authorities.
The local Sheriff's Department issued an alert in an effort to track down the man and the two kids. They were concerned for the children's safety. Within several hours, the man was located and the children returned to their mother.
When situation like this occur, law enforcement tries to figure out why the parent took the children in the first place. Though it is not clear what the custodial agreement is between the two parents, one could speculate that the father simply wanted to spend more time with his children.
Child custody issues can bring up a number of emotions. If one or both parents do not like the custody agreement that was reached, it can lead to poor decision making. This particular father may not have realized his actions could land him in jail, but if he is charged the consequences could impact his future with his children.
