Gas prices slow down spending, but worst may be over

In the Rochester area, the average price of regular gasoline peaked in mid-May at $4.06 a gallon and was $3.84 on Monday. A year ago, it was $2.87.

High gas prices "have created a real pinch in a lot of people's budgets," said Rochelle Ruffer, an associate economics professor at Nazareth College in Pittsford. "Gasoline has an inelastic demand — it's close to a necessity for a lot of people. So something else has to give." A number of retailers have indicated recently that the combination of high gas prices and 9.1 percent unemployment nationally have prompted shoppers to pare back purchases of less essential goods. For the first quarter of Walmart's 2011 fiscal year, same-store sales in the U.S. were down 1.4 percent. Same-store sales are considered the best indicator of a retailer's performance because they factor out revenues from newly opened or recently closed stores, which can skew results.

Gas prices inch down in advance of July 4th holiday

"We're definitely going out of town this weekend," said Kittie Seibert, who adds she's happy to see lower numbers at the gas pump. "They're better than they were, but I think they can still get better," said Seibert. AAA says the Roanoke area is paying

Gas prices slow down spending, but worst may be over

Consumer spending unexpectedly stagnated in May as gas prices — which were still rising at that point — caused Americans to cut back. Although prices at the pump have been slowly declining in recent weeks, they haven't come down much.

Saving Valuable Money At The Gas Pump

When you find yourself waiting inside the car, you may want to park it somewhere so that you can stop the engine from running and eating up that valuable gas.  Not only will you save on gas, but you will also help in minimizing air pollution.  You will do your environment some good as well.

Whenever you can, try to avoid idling – some may even warm up their cars to five minutes or more of idling.  This may not be necessary for newer models of cars – for a lesser amount of time, you can very well go on your way.

You may think that a gasoline with a higher octane level will do your car good.  More often than not, you will not need the gas with the highest level of octane rating.

You will just need what your car would require as per the user’s manual.  Opting for the highest priced gasoline will just mean you will be paying for more. Use only gas with higher levels of octane, if your engine is knocking.  Otherwise, it will just be a waste of money.

Going for slower speed would mean less fuel consumption.  Putting your pedal to the metal will just mean more gasoline usage – and more costs for you when it will be time to fill in the tank.

As much as possible, minimize fast starts as it will have an effect on your fuel consumption as well.  Level up your driving appropriately, and shift gears gradually.  It will not do you well to hurry up and force your car to reach high speeds right away – this will cause you to burn more fuel.

A well-maintained engine would mean a car that would run smoothly and efficiently.  Being so, it is expected that your car would burn less fuel.

It is advised that you change your oil as recommended in the car manual. Use also the recommended grade of oil for your car.  Doing so will mean your engine will be in a much better condition – with reduced wear of moving components and with the removal of harmful substances.  You will increase your gas mileage with this.

You should also check on your air filter and change it as needed.  You will find that doing so will reduce engine strain and improve fuel economy.

Check also your tires’ pressure – it should be inflated as prescribed.  With less tire pressure, it would mean you would consume more fuel as the traction between the rubber and the ground is much greater. This would mean more force needed to move the car – and thus the more fuel you will use with this.
