K-Tribe Win Streak Ends
Kinston’s season high six game win streak came to an end with a 5-2, eleven inning loss to Potomac Monday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the loss Kinston drops to 4-1 in the second half. The start of the game was delayed almost ninety minutes because of rain.
Down 2-1, Kinston came roaring back in the bottom of the ninth inning off of Potomac reliever Hector Nelo. Adam Abraham led off with a single. After advancing to second base on a wild pitch, Abraham stayed at second as Abner Abreu’s bunt attempt was caught on a dive by Nelo. Cannon delivered an RBI double to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eleventh inning, Cutter Dykstra started things with a bunt single off of Kinston closer Preston Guilmet. A soft chopper to the right side of the infield by Eury Perez put runners on first and second. With Francisco Soriano at the plate, both Dykstra and Perez took off in pursuit of a double steal. Kinston catcher Roberto Perez made a solid throw to third base, but Casey Frawley could not reel it in and the ball trickled out to left field, sending Dykstra home. The error on Frawley was the only error in the game for Kinston. Potomac would add another run on a squeeze bunt from J.R. Higley. Justin Bloxom then delivered an RBI single to take a 5-2 advantage. Kinston would load the bases in the bottom of the 11th thanks to three walks, but could not get the runs back.
Eury Perez got to Kinston starter Clayton Cook with a lead-off double in the top of the third inning. A one out, sacrifice fly by Destin Hood drove Perez home to break the scoreless tie. Cook went six innings, giving up four hits and one run. He walked three and struck out four.
Potomac starting pitcher Danny Rosenbaum ran into trouble in the top of the fifth when he hit Abner Abreu with a pitch. A wild pitch advanced Abreu to second base. Tyler Cannon drove him home with an RBI single.
The Nationals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning, when Dykstra hit a bases loaded ground out off of Kinston reliever Chris Jones.
Guilmet (0-1) was the tough luck loser for Kinston, giving up four hits and three earned runs in two innings. Nelo blew the save, but got the win in relief for Kinston. Jose Flores threw a perfect inning from the K-Tribe pen. Cannon went 2-for-5 with two RBI for Kinston.
The final game of the homestand takes place Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Game time 6:30 pm with Steve Wright on the mound for Kinston. It is a $2 Tuesday with all tickets for everyone just $2! Plus $2 burgers!
