Seoul to Rig Up Special Planes to Infiltrate N.Korea
The South Korean military plans to fit out aircraft that will allow special forces to infiltrate North Korea's nuclear and missile bases at night or in bad weather. Currently South Korea depends on the U.S. military for support of such aircraft.
"We need to improve our special forces' capabilities to infiltrate North Korean military facilities in preparation for asymmetric threats from the North like nuclear or missile attacks or for a sudden change there," a military source said Monday. "So we decided to retrofit four of the Air Force's C-130 transport planes into aircraft similar to MC-130s," the U.S.' special operations aircraft.

Jeju Island bore the brunt of the Meari's damaging winds, accompanied by torrential rains. But wide areas of southern and western Korea suffered flooding rain and high winds.
Electrical pylons were toppled on Jeju and the southern mainland, according to the Times. A bridge on the Nakdong River of southeastern South Korea was collapsed by floodwaters. Highland areas were hit by landslides.
Tropical storm rainfall was 6 to 12 inches over much of the peninsula. Taejon, South Korea, was it with nearly 13 inches of rain within 48 hours.
Soaking rainfall unrelated to Meari preceded that of the tropical storm, so Meari's flood impact was magnified.
Meari's life cycle began over tropical seas east of the Philippines, and it was named by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on June 22.
Landfall was on the coast of western North Korea Sunday night, local time, followed by much improved weather on Monday.
