Dr. Gott: Reader seeks information on dealing with gout

Dear Dr. Gott: I just found out that the terrible pain I have been having is gout. Through many hours of research on the Internet, I have found out that I should not eat high-purine foods but should eat low-purine foods. However, I cannot find a list of what is acceptable versus what is not. Can you help? Also, is there a website, book or other resource where I could find menus? Thank you.

For Gout Sufferers – Food To Avoid | Alternative Therapies HQ

Your gout is brought on by uric acid crystals that shape in the joints, tendons and encircling tissue. These normally form when there are high levels, or at least greater than regular levels, of uric acid in your blood. This uric acid is a natural result of the break down of chemical substances called purines available in our bodies’ cells and in our foods. Now, what usually happens is that this uric acid is processed by your kidneys, with excess uric acid becoming flushed out of your body through your urine. But — there’s always a ‘but’ isn’t there? — occasionally your kidneys don’t carry out this function well enough, with the result that greater uric acid levels are retained inside your bloodstream, leading to uric acid crystals and then gout. This could occur simply because there is an excessive amount of uric acid being created for your kidneys to handle, or, your kidneys aren’t operating up to their complete potential.Either way, what you cannot be doing as a gout sufferer, would be to keep producing much more uric acid into your system. And also you saw above how purines, that deliver the uric acid, also can be found in your foods. So there is part of the solution right there; your food. But different foods contain various levels of purines, so, as a gout victim, you should decrease your consumption of foods that have high levels of purines.Quite simply avoid these foods which are rich in purines, and, eat foods that are fairly low in purines…
