The public is being invited for a July 4 preview even though there's more work to be done. The grand opening is slated for July 30.

General contractor Mark Gliniewicz said the 3,500-square-foot center in the heart of the village should be completed by then.

"There's a lot of pride in building this building," Gliniewicz said. "I got the best subcontractors in the state of Maine putting it together."

Gliniewicz of Belgrade Lakes Carpentry Inc., said subcontractors who have been working on the project since October include Independent Builders of Skowhegan; and Chuck Leary Builders of South China.

The project is an initiative of Docks to Doorways -- a coalition of Colby College and conservation-minded groups, including the Belgrade Lakes Association and the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance.

The group raised $2.5 million with a $450,000 challenge grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation to acquire two village properties and to construct the Maine Lakes Resource Center and Conservation Park.

This building is only the first phase of the project. It also includes plans for a community park adjacent to the post office and restoration of public docks and a boathouse for the historic mail boat made famous by the movie "On Golden Pond."

Gliniewicz said he traveled to Pennsylvania with Matt Morrill of Grand View Timber Frames in Winthrop to select timber for the interior from razed barns that were 200 to 300 years old.

"It comes from four different barns," he said. "We had to create a frame out of the timber then build a conventional framed building around that. This is white oak, and you can still see the scribe marks from the original barn builders to mark where the mortise holes and pegs would go."

At street level there's space for film screenings with seating for 80, a library, a reception area and a wet lab that will be staffed by Colby College scientists and students.

"Colby has generously donated quite a few materials for this, cabinets and chemical-resistant treated countertops," Gliniewicz said. "There will be two windows and a glass door so people can watch what they're doing."

The building will be lit inside and out with antique fixtures. A farmer's porch at the back of the building overlooks Mill Stream, which connects Great Pond and Long Pond.

Gliniewicz said every drop of storm water hitting the property is captured in catch basins, then pumped into rain gardens along a granite retaining wall.

Pond Skimmer Filters- How to Install Pond Skimmer in Your Pond ...

 In order to remove leaves, twigs and other debris that gets stuck inside the mechanical filter or is present on the surface of your  Calgary gardens   pond, a pond skimmer can be used.  Along with making available a secondary mechanical filtration mat and a filter basket, a pond skimmer also provides an effective housing for your pump.  A pond skimmer filter can be installed easily and it does not necessitate adjustment of the pump or cleaning the filter.

 5 Steps to properly Install Algreen’s Pond Skimmer.

 1. Create a hole near your pond keeping in mind that’s it is a bit larger than the pond skimmer in order to accommodate the pond skimmer box.  You must assure that the hole that you dig is properly leveled and compact in nature.  Make sure that you level the pond skimmer box  From  side to side and front to back.  ¾” to 1 ½” below the top of the weir opening is the desired water level after you have finished leveling the skimmer box.

 2. Carefully connect the pond skimmer with pond liner making sure that the liner is at least one inch away from the skimmer box. Allow a little slack liner below the weir opening (the pond liner will settle a little after you have completed installation).

 3. Now quickly reassemble the weir over the skimmer box along with the pond liner that has been purchased separately such that it is sandwiched between the skimmer box and weir assembly.  Top two corner mounting holes need to be located.  Use nail or awl to cautiously punch holes in the liner and pre-drilled plate exactly where mounting screws are positioned.  After you have inserted the blackened screws, make sure that you check the alignment. The pond liner should fit comfortably.

4. Disassemble and apply the fish-safe silicone sealant provided to the pond filter box around the weir opening and the screw holes. Reassemble. Punch the remaining holes through the liner.  It is important to first insert the screws and then tighten them properly in following arrange: 1. Top two corners, 2. Bottom two corners, 3. Remaining holes.

 5. You must also fix two barb-head fittings at the pond skimmer filter’s back. To connect a waterfall pump (purchase separately) you place the pump in the back of the skimmer behind the basket and filter mat.
