The Australian Outback is made for camping holidays. It doesn’t matter if you hire a campervan for a month or if you throw your tent and sleeping bag in the back of your Ute and just go. Camping in the Aussie Outback is something you’ll remember forever; the vastness of the place, the solitude and serenity, the campfire and the millions and millions of stars.
Most travellers look forward to camping outback under the stars. But bush camping can be “heaven or hell” depending on prepared you are There are some supermarkets in the outback with a reasonable range of supplies so it’s best to stock up on perishables such at every opportunity. The outback produces mighty steaks and fish like John Dory and freshwater crayfish (like yabbies and marron) from the outback dams and waterholes. Those travelling on an extended escape should get a good portable fridge (known as an ‘esky’).
Outback Cooking It’s great to be able to cook your meal on the coals like a real “bushman. In some areas open fires are prohibited especially during summer fire-danger periods. The bans also exist to protect wildlife within the area. It is best most of the time to plan to use a gas stove. If you do cook over an open fire be very very careful. Use good quality cast iron pots and a steel grate to put your pots on. You should use hardwood that will burn down to good coals and then use the coals for cooking rather than the flames. If you are able to build a safe fire then dig a trench in which to lay your fire. It should be about 30cm deep.

The Bush Shower While you may not want to stop for a shower every day, you will need to make some provision for a “bush shower” if you spend long enough in the Outback. You can carry a “flip up” shower tent. This is a great little bit of gear. It folds down flat and it pops up by itself. Make sure you have two lightweight mesh style plastic door mats. Use one to wipe your feet and the other inside to stand on. A small pump connected to the car battery, connected to a shower rose with water heated on your campfire in a bucket, gives a good shower.
The Bush Toilet You will need something to sleep in. A swag (a real bed that can be rolled up for transport), or a sleeping bag and a foam or insulating pad to go underneath are ideal. A tent is optional (many prefer it for the privacy). It’s nice to have if it’s cold or wet, but during hot nights a mosquito dome or mozzie net is the way to go. Camping chairs and a table are handy for the evenings and having your meals around. Be sure to take plenty of water, spare fuel, enough ice and maybe fire wood, depending on where you’re going. A torch is always helpful for those dark outback nights. Last but not least, don’t forget the bottle opener!
