Back on the track
Howard Ford says he always has two angels by his side when he’s out on the racetrack.The longtime local race car driver has a handmade decal on his hood portraying his father, Bud Ford,and former racing crew member and close friend Vestel Skaggs, along with the words “Racing with Angels.”
On his dash next to the steering wheel is another decal that reads, “Never drive faster than your angels can fly.”
“When I’m in the car racing I know that they are there,” Ford said. “You can’t ask them a question directly, but they answer a question in their own way. Something will happen and later on it works out in a way that you know that ‘oh yeah, that’s how they answered my question.’”
After losing both of them over a six-month period starting in December 2009, Ford wondered if he would race agin.
“At the time, obviously, it was absolutely devastating,” he said. “To lose that much in that short amount of time, I didn’t know what to do. I did think that maybe it was time to move on.”
He eventually changed his mind and has gradually returned to racing.
Last season, Ford, 54, did not compete until August and took part in only four races, taking second in two of them.
On Saturday, Ford will race for the first time this year at the Redwood Acres Speedway in Eureka. The races begin at 6 p.m.
“I’m going to have to get the rust off,” Ford said. “But I’m ready to race. As long as I still have that desire I know I can still win.”
In 2007 and 2008, Ford won the North State Challenge Racing Series and carved a niche as an elite driver in the region.
Ford began racing in 1977 at
the Samoa drag strip in Humboldt County, winning several times, and has been racing for the most part every since.
In December 2009, Bud Ford of Arcata died at the age of 74 in a fishing accident while looking for crab in Eureka.
Bud Ford was at every race and was very close to his son.
“He was my biggest fan,” Ford said.
Six months later, Vestal Skaggs, who was on Ford’s racing crew for more than 15 years and a close friend, died of a heart attack at age 60.
“He was one of my best friends and loved racing,” Ford said.
On Thursday at his Crescent City body shop, Howard Ford proudly showed pictures of his father. One was of the time his dad was able to take the car out and drive a few laps around the track.
