Homa or yagna therapy is becoming popular in the city and hundreds of people with chronic and incurable diseases are turning to this alternative treatment, which is said to combine time-tested traditional and scientifically proven, herbs. The basic ingredients used in homa or yagna are specific herbs that are said by homa practitioners to have properties to cure the specific problem. So a childless couple will be given herbs said to enhance fertility levels, while a diabetic is given herbs with antihyperglycemic properties.

“The strategy is three-fold. We use medicinal plants in homa therapy and patients inhale the medicated smoke or fumes. We also give them herbal formulations for oral intake, and third, we recommend a strict diet regime combined with enhanced physical activity."

"In a way, we are combing the ancient wisdom of our saints and modern knowledge of herbs to treat health problems that are complicated and difficult to treat through the modern system of medicine,” said Swami Satyaveer of the Suvigna Ashramam at Naraspur village on the outskirts of the city, who practices this form of healing.

Even as increasing numbers of patients are attracted to homa therapy, Vedic experts like Dr Kuppa Venkata Krishna Murty of the Institute of Scientific Research on Vedas counsels caution.

He says that though yagna has natural benefits for our health and environment, whether the addition of ayurvedic herbs to the homa fire will help cure chronic diseases, has yet to be studied scientifically.

“In our research studies we have found that yagna has several benefits for human beings and the environment they live in. It affects even plants by increasing the yield. The traditional ingredients offered to fire in homa help to fight pollution of mind and body and the environment. But there has thus far been no scientific study on whether ayurvedic herbs if included in the homa will help cure diseases,” he emphasises.
