New Employer in Hope Raises Jobs And Cancer Concerns
HOPE, Arkansas -- A new employer has opened it's doors in Hope, Arkansas, bringing 29 new jobs with the addition of six more to come in the future. Amerities South LLC. is a railroad tie manufacturing plant that makes railroad ties for Union Pacific Railroad. It's the first factory of it's kind to open in approximately 30 years. Mayor of Hope Dennis Ramsey says the addition of Amierities to Hope is part of bringing more jobs to the Arkansas town. ""We have the possibility of some 450 and 500 manufacturing jobs in Hope and Hempstead County - and obviously that's good for our community and good for our citizens," adds Mayor Ramsey. Amerities was at risk of not happening at one point. The railroad tie company wanted to set up shop in Texarkana in 2005. But strong opposition from the city put the brakes on that. Hope turned out to be the new home for the factory. The reason, a chemical called Creosote. Creosote is a wood preservative the Environmental Protection Agency has listed as a possible carcinogen. Mayor Ramsey insists the plant is safe. ""It's a state of the art facility. Everything is environmentally contained. This is not like the former generations of Creosote type generating facilities," adds the Mayor. Amerities was contacted for a statement but was unable to return our calls. The $202 million Colton Crossing, a long-sought project to separate where the Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway tracks meet south of Interstate 10, must start construction by the end of the year or forfeit $33.8 million in federal stimulus funds.
BNSF is one of seven Class I railroads, which span the US and Canada. It is the second largest line behind only the Union Pacific. Other key players include, but are not limited to, the Kansas City Southern and the Norfolk Southern.
