Pickleball players Desiree Fey, 67, left, and Larry Mason, 73, both of Arlington, look to return a serve during a match at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington. Pickleball is a hybrid game that has elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. The game is mostly marketed at seniors but has found its way into middle and high schools as part of the physical education curriculum. The courts are somewhat like those used in tennis but smaller in size, and the net is lower, with players using paddles instead of rackets.

This summer, the county’s parks department is painting pickleball lines on the two tennis courts in Jennie Dean Park, creating what are thought to be the area’s first public outdoor pickleball courts.

Played on a badminton-size court, the game begins with an underhand serve from behind the base line. The ball must sail over the 34-inch-high net and bounce into the opponent’s service box.

-  He wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was the author.

- Helped pass the Statute of Religious Freedom in Virginia. He was also advocated separating Religion from State

- He founded the University of Virginia. He greatly valued education.

-He was John Adams’ vice-president and  Jefferson himself become the president after Adams’ term was over.

- As president, he negotiated the  Louisiana Purchase from France which doubled the size of the United States.

- He also invented and improved upon devices such as the wheel cipher, the Great Clock, the revolving bookstand, the moldboard plow and the polygraph.

- He and James Madison founded and led the Democratic-Republican Party.

Thomas Jefferson Views and Beliefs Beliefs/views on religion – He believed in Unitarianism (the belief that God exists in one person, not three.) and in Deism (the belief that God exists, but that He is not directly involved in the world.) Jefferson also refers to himself as “Christian” in his letters.
