A new study proves what you previously only suspected: a Porsche will get a man a hot, sexy date -- but not necessarily a hot, sexy wife.

In what may be one of the dumbest, most obvious studies in a long time, USATODAY.com's Your Life reports that researchers at three universities found men's conspicuous consumption is often driven by a desire to have uncommitted romantic flings. Wow, that's going out on a limb. We thought that blowing a couple hundred grand on a new sports car was really just an attempt to help create good jobs for autoworkers in foreign countries, or to show passing birds how you can travel a lot faster than they can fly.

Shockingly, it turns out that the Porsche works as an effective sexual attractant to women.

The story says:

In analyzing more than 1,000 men, researchers revealed that being in possession of a Porsche or another flashy luxury product did make a man more desirable to women than owning a non-luxury item, such as a Honda Civic. However, the attraction ended there.

While women who did find a man who drove a Porsche more attractive as a date, she did not find him more desirable as a marriage partner for a long-term committed relationship, the study authors said.

So we suspect the lesson here is buy the Porsche, have multiple flings based on your German-engineered sexual prowess, but if you find the right woman and want to make it permanent, you'd better buy a Buick.

Lest this story seem entirely sexist, consider that maybe the Porsche works the other way, as well.
