Beamsville market set to open June 18. The Beamsville Farmers’ Market steering committee recognized the winners of its logo contest for local youth. Amanda Rintjema was the first-place winner, while Lauren Bylsma was second and Raquel Smith was third. The Beamsville Farmers’ Market is continuing to forge ahead with plans to open the market on Saturday, June 18. The market will run on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Great Lakes Christian High School, 4875 King St. in Beamsville. That is the same day the Strawberry Festival Association holds its inaugural Berries & Blooms celebration just a few minutes away at Beamsville District Secondary School. While farmers grow their fruit and vegetables for the market, the committee has been growing its marketing plan. Recently committee members celebrated the participation of local students in establishing a logo for the market. The contest closed in late April, and three entries were selected to be blended together for the final logo. Entries by Amanda Rintjema (first place), Laura Bylsma (second) and Raquel Smith (third) were selected, and also received gift certificates to Toys R Us for their efforts. The logo design is now being blended by Ann Marie Torello-Arnott of Little Bull Designs. She has taken on the task free of charge. With just a couple of weeks left until opening day, the steering committee is encouraging anyone interested in participating to contact them right away. There are opportunities for a wide variety of products, and potential vendors will be provided an application and market handbook. Vendors will be required to have 75 per cent of their products homegrown, with the importance of homegrown stressed at the market. All vendors must comply with Niagara Region Health Unit guidelines as well as other market guidelines outlined in the vendor package. Students discussed the way slogans get stuck in your head and how it is important that they be catchy and maybe even a little bit related to contemporary culture. Then, they came up with their own Christian slogans to tell the world how they feel about their faith or to tell what their faith is about. Once the slogans were refined students needed to design a visual symbol that communicated or related to their slogan as clearly as possible. Designs were kept simple to have bigger impact and to allow for less complex collograph printing onto t-shirts, which the students could wear once completed. I just completed my B.F.A. degree with a double major in painting and art education and a double minor in art history and creative writing. While I wait for a full time art teaching position to become available I teach at workshops, camps and through private lessons. I also teach art at my church's Sunday school program. I've been writing a novel, which I hope to keep working on in my (little) free time. Overall, I like to have lots of things going on so that I feel productive, but sometimes I forget to relax!
