WASHINGTON — Brenda Gunter has traveled the world, but a quest to put San Angelo on the map drives the winner of the Jefferson Civic Leader of the Year Award.
Tuesday, Gunter was on an expedition to the nation's capital to represent the San Angelo area at the 2011 national Jefferson Awards.
"My story and my award is a real personal one because it's attached to a city as a whole and the importance of a historic district to the city and to the future of our town," Gunter said during an interview Monday in Washington.
The willowy blonde, who once lived in New York City and was president of the Calvin Klein Collection, feels right at home in San Angelo. She moved there in 1999 after marrying businessman and historic preservationist Ken Gunter.
Much of her life was spent globe-trotting to Paris, Hong Kong, Milan, Japan and other far-flung places, but she was raised in a farming and ranching community in Kansas.
Moving to San Angelo was like coming home.
"I related to San Angelo and all that went on there because that was my background," she said.
She's president of Downtown San Angelo Inc., a nonprofit downtown revitalization and preservation organization.
She's also an arts advocate, owner of Miss Hattie's Café and Saloon, and an incubator of ideas to promote her adopted city.
Initially, the hardest thing about moving to San Angelo was slowing down from the fast-paced world of fashion and recreating herself.
"The great thing was that San Angelo was at a time period when they were really, really interested in revitalizing our downtown area and taking it to the next level," she said.
Suddenly jobless, Gunter was hungry to put the passion and energy she'd channeled into fashion into something new.
She and other local leaders invested in the city's future knew it wasn't on an interstate highway, so they needed a way to make their town stand out enough to attract tourists, retirees, shoppers, new companies, entrepreneurs and others to intentionally come by and maybe even stay.
"I felt very strongly that San Angelo had some wonderful history that we needed to build on," Gunter said.
Her business, Miss Hattie's in the original San Angelo National Bank building, has its own colorful history related to the bank, a bordello and a connecting tunnel.
She has seen positive results since the city was designated a Preserve America Community and one of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
