What's the best travel insurance for you?
That’s if they even make it there. Several holiday companies have gone bust in the past couple of months, leaving tens of thousands with their summer breaks cancelled. Here we explain what to do if something goes wrong.
WHAT IF OPERATOR GOES BUST?
Holidays4U is the latest company to collapse, causing around 50,000 people to have their plans cancelled. Fortunately, the operator was registered under the Civil Aviation Authority’s Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing protection scheme, so customers will not lose money.
All companies selling package holidays must offer protection in case they go bust. For advice about refunds under the ATOL scheme, visit www.atol.org.uk or call the CAA on 0844 493 3037.
WHAT IF I’VE BOOKED A FLIGHT DIRECT WITH AN AIRLINE?
You will not be covered by ATOL if that airline goes bust, so before booking consider travel insurance that covers airline insolvency.
If you paid for your flight by credit card and the cost was over £100, then you should still be able to get your money back.
Under the Consumer Credit Act, the lender and the supplier are jointly liable when it comes to making sure you are provided with the goods or service you paid for, so you can turn to the credit card firm to get your money back.
WHAT IF I FALL ILL?
When you are travelling in Europe and have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you will be entitled to the same State-provided healthcare as a resident of the country you are visiting.
But this should never be seen as a substitute for travel insurance as it won’t cover things like getting you home if you have to miss your flight back because of sickness. Unless you have medical insurance, you will have to cover costs.
The average medical claim made by Brits who fall ill or have an accident abroad is £1,333, according to Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance.
You should therefore take out cover as soon as you’ve booked your holiday so if you can’t go for medical reasons, your insurer can cover the cost. Our table on the left shows the cost of cover for a family of four for two weeks in Spain.
WHAT IF MY HOTEL IS TERRIBLE?
Complain to your holiday rep as soon as possible and try to get evidence of why things are so bad. Take photos and get the details of other unhappy holidaymakers.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) offer an independent settlement service.
