Grand building mourned

FITCHBURG  —  Betsy Dionne said the historic Johnsonia building was really the shining star of Main Street.

“It's just such a loss to the city,” Ms. Dionne said today from the Fitchburg Historical Society on Grove Street, where she works as administrative assistant. The five-story building at 520 Main St. was decimated in a fire that started about 9:30 last night.


One of the largest buildings in the city, it was built as a hotel and became the pride of Fitchburg, according to the Historical Society. Work on the building, initially known as the Iver Johnson Building, began in 1896 and was completed in 1898. The exterior was made of Indiana sandstone and Roman brick on an iron frame in an Italian Renaissance style with high-arched windows.

During the time the hotel and dining room were in operation, several important events were celebrated there. In 1899, famed Indian fighter and Civil War General Nelson A. Miles was given a royal welcome there by the city. In 1902, Minister Wu Ting Fang from China was a guest.

The Johnsonia became associated with prominent members of society. According to the Fitchburg Historical Society collection, there is an undocumented report that Teddy Roosevelt stopped at the Johnsonia during his 1902 visit to Fitchburg.

Forty-six condos in the building were either rented or owned. Initial reports to the Red Cross, which is helping displaced residents, indicated that about 60 people lived in the condos.

Erin Sullivan was one of the displaced residents. She stood by herself on the sidewalk this morning across the street from the building. Tears rolled down her face.

Ms. Sullivan said she was at home in her second-floor condo last night watching the Bruins hockey playoff game when she heard the alarms go off.

“I didn't think much of it at first because the alarms are always going off,” Ms. Sullivan. When she realized that it was no fire drill, she said, “I grabbed my dogs and got out of there.”

The Johnsonia was home to a number of Fitchburg State University professors.

Tom Murray, an English professor at the university, has lived in his fifth-floor apartment for several years. He fears that he lost everything he owned in the fire, including 40 years worth of book collecting. Mr.
