Newest OVAC Hall of Fame Class Has Linsly Feel

The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Hall of Fame completes its Class of 2011 today with the announcement of the final installment of athletes.

The Hall of Fame, which is located inside WesBanco Arena, is sponsored by Bob Robinson Chevrolet-Cadillac. It will induct its eighth class on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The representatives of the 1980s, 1990s and the Class of 2000 are being announced this week with a strong Linsly flavor.

This marks the first year that the decade of the 2000s is included.

Since athletes must be out of high school 10 years before they can be considered, the Class of 2000 is now eligible. Since there was just one class to choose from, the HOF committee opted to only induct one athlete.

Here is a capsule look at the honorees:

WILLIE CLAY (Linsly School, Class of 1988) - This former Cadet did it all during his four years on the Wheeling campus.

While earning letters in three sports, it was on the football field where he made his biggest impact to the Cadets' program.

Clay was the unquestioned leader and most recognized player on teams, which won 23 consecutive games and recorded the first two undefeated seasons in the school's history when it finished 10-0 in 1986 and 9-0 in 1987.

Excelling as a defensive back, wide receiver and kick returner, Clay earned numerous postseason honors during his career. As a senior, despite the Cadets' run-first offensive schemes, Clay managed to catch 30 passes for 428 yards and five touchdowns. He also took two kickoffs back for touchdowns and had five interceptions.

He was named All-OVAC, All-Valley and all-state twice. He was the captain of the big-school team after his senior season.

On the basketball court, Clay led the Cadets his senior season with a 17.5 points per game average, while shooting 48 percent from the floor. He also passed out 170 assists en route to earning All-OVAC and All-Valley.

In the spring, Clay lit up area baseball diamonds. He batted .423 as a senior and was named All-OVAC and All-Valley.

Despite his success on so many surfaces, it was football that was his calling at the next level. Clay accepted a scholarship to attend Georgia Tech University where he earned all-ACC honors twice. At one time, Clay held the Yellow Jackets' school record for interceptions (16) after starting in the defensive backfield for three seasons.

In 1992, Clay was drafted in the eighth round by the Detroit Lions and played eight seasons in the NFL. Along with the Lions, he also played for the New England Patriots for three seasons and one with the Saints. All told, he played in 118 NFL games and started 90.
