But that doesn't mean our summer wardrobe need be.

Not that it's a trend, per se, but nautical-inspired clothing sets anchor each spring and summer, from subtle navy stripes on blouses to overboard details (crab shorts, anyone? ).

Such pieces, from clothing to accessories, are an investment, said Martha Gil de Montes, a Macy's fashion expert based in California.

"It's become less of a trend and more of a fashion staple," she said. "You may need to store them in your closet for a season, but the nautical theme is guaranteed to re-emerge every summer with a new fresh twist."

Every few years or so, the nautical look is a bit hotter than usual, said Suzanne Guymon, fashion communications director for Dillard's department stores.

"Nothing says spring and summer like timeless, classic fashion inspired by the sand and sea," she said.

Typically, nautical fashion has a retro feel, but contemporary styling in this season's fashions makes it fresh and new, Guymon said. The primary colors are always navy and white, but accents of bright orange or red complement the overall look beautifully.

"The key to wearing this trend is to not go overboard," she said (told you so). Nautical from head to toe becomes more of a costume rather than a fashion statement.

"Pick one piece that is nautically inspired, and let that be the focal point," Guymon said. Then, use your basic fashion pieces to build your outfit around it.

Like the white-and-blue striped dress by Bar III at Macy's, Gil de Montes said - "simple, crisp and chic."

Some of you may get seasick at the thought of horizontal stripes, but that's a key nautical look.

Although they're always a big summer trend, stripes are bigger, bolder and brighter this season, said Amanda Viles of Saks Fifth Avenue at Utica Square.

Open-weave knitwear, casual sailor-inspired pure whites and stripes blend sartorial tailoring and slouchy ease for the relaxed summer season, Viles said.

Cases in point include pieces by Joie, like the "Shasta" striped silk top with a crewneck and the "Trudy" striped silk dress at Saks. Also there, the label Vince offers a casual-cool boat-neck cropped top in an airy, open-weave knit with dramatic dolman sleeves.

An unconfirmed sources of information has just released a report that the Sen. Bill Frist, Majority Leader is pushing a two-week full Senate floor debate beginning from March 20, 2006 rather than March 27, 2006. This report is indirectly supported by another news that the Senate Judiciary Committee is pressed to extend their additional mark-up on Friday, March 17 to finish up the Committee action before the end of the week. Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to pickup the Sen. Specter's Mark of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bills today. Initially it was scheduled for two days, March 15 and March 16, but the AILA has just obtained the information that the Committee has tentatively extended the mark-up on March 17, Friday as well in order to finish up this business within this week. As we reported earlier, the Committee has been working on a tight schedule because of the pressure from Senator Frist, the Majority Leader of the Senate to start debate on the Comprehensive Immigration Reform in the Senate beginning from March 27, 2006. IV core leadership has to change and so is the stratergy. Current Lobbying efforts have clearly not worked out. I call for elections to elect the new core team. All these conference calls and inaction is just wastage of time and things are getting worse. We need an aggressive stratergy and may need to take names and hit people openly to get our agenda pushed. IV leadership clearly lacks these skills.
